Species names in particular are worth being able to spell — Ixodes scapularis and Ixodes pacificus are two characters apart and refer to ticks on opposite sides of the continent.

Why a typing test, and what it is good for
Spelling a tick's name correctly is not a party trick. It is the difference between finding the right information and finding nothing. Search for "ixodes scapulari" and you will get results; search a provincial surveillance dashboard or a journal database for it and you will get silence. Clinical notes, laboratory requisitions and public health reports all run on exact terms, and the vocabulary in this field is unusually unforgiving: three Borrelia species with entirely different diseases attached to them, two nearly identical Dermacentor ticks separated by a mountain range, and a genus name (Ixodes) that most people have only ever heard spoken.
What this page is genuinely good for is repetition. Typing a term forces you to attend to every character in it, which is a different and more durable kind of attention than reading. The measurement — words per minute, accuracy — is there to give the repetition a shape and a reason to do it twice. It is not a credential and it does not mean anything about your knowledge of ticks.
How the scoring works
Both numbers are computed the ordinary way, and it is worth knowing exactly how so you can compare them with other tests.
- Words per minute treats five characters as one word, which is the long-standing convention, and counts the full length of the passage against the elapsed time. Paused time does not count.
- Accuracy is measured per keystroke, not per finished character. Every character you insert is checked against the character it should have been at that position. Fixing a mistake with backspace corrects the text but the original wrong keystroke still counts against accuracy, which is why accuracy and a clean finished passage are not the same thing.
Scientific binomials drag WPM down for everyone. Haemaphysalis longicornis is 25 characters of low-frequency letter pairs; nobody's fingers have muscle memory for it. If you want a number that compares to a general typing test, use the prevention and removal set, which is closer to everyday English.
Why these particular distinctions matter
Three pairs in the glossary below are worth singling out, because confusing them changes what someone would actually do.
Borrelia burgdorferi against Borrelia miyamotoi. Both are Borrelia, both come from blacklegged ticks, and there the similarity ends. The first causes Lyme disease. The second causes hard tick relapsing fever, a different illness that standard Lyme serology will not find. CDC's 2026 western North Carolina report detected both in the same tick population, which is precisely the situation where the distinction stops being academic.
The two Anaplasma phagocytophilum strains. Surveillance reports separate a human-active strain from a nonhuman-active strain, also called variant 1, that lives in blacklegged ticks without causing human disease. A news report saying "Anaplasma found in local ticks" has not told you which one, and only one of them matters to a patient.
Dermacentor variabilis against Dermacentor similis. CDC now lists both under "American dog tick" and says more research is needed to understand their roles in disease transmission. D. similis was separated from D. variabilis only recently, and confirming it in British Columbia required DNA sequencing after both morphology and a PCR banding pattern had put the specimens in the wrong species.
The honest limits of vocabulary
Knowing the terms is a prerequisite, not a competence. Being able to spell Ixodes scapularis does not mean you can recognise one, and recognising one in a photograph does not mean you can identify the specimen that bit you — feeding changes a tick's shape and colour, immature stages look like plainer versions of adults, and some species genuinely cannot be separated without sequencing. In CDC's Biltmore Forest collection, 37 of 373 ticks could not be identified to species at all because their morphology was too damaged, and that was trained people with a microscope.
So: if you have an actual tick and the answer matters, get it looked at. In Canada, photograph it and upload it to eTick.ca. In the United States, check your state health department first; the Pennsylvania Tick Research Lab tests free for Pennsylvania residents and TickReport at UMass Amherst accepts mail-in specimens nationally. And if you feel unwell after a bite, the terminology is not the point — see a clinician.
Accessibility and what this page does not do
The input is a labelled text area with a described help text, and results are announced through a live region as they are produced. Nothing takes focus away from you, the pause button really pauses the clock, and there is a visible restart control that generates a fresh passage. There is no countdown, no forced pace, no sound, and no animation beyond the character highlighting.
There is also nothing to sign up for, no leaderboard, no streak to protect, and no result stored anywhere beyond the tab you have open. Close it and your score is gone. The passage is drawn at random from the set you chose, so two runs are rarely identical.

Species and life stages
Amblyomma americanum
The lone star tick. Widely distributed across the Northeast, South and Midwest of the United States. CDC describes it as a very aggressive human biter; the adult female carries the single white dot that gives the species its name. Nymphs and adult females most frequently bite people.

Amblyomma maculatum
The Gulf Coast tick. Found primarily in the southeastern United States, with focal populations in the northeast, midwest and southwest. It transmits Rickettsia parkeri rickettsiosis, a form of spotted fever; adult ticks are the stage associated with transmission to humans.

Dermacentor andersoni
The Rocky Mountain wood tick. CDC gives its range as Rocky Mountain states and southwestern Canada at elevations of 4,000 to 10,500 feet. It transmits Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Colorado tick fever and tularemia, with adult ticks primarily associated with transmission to humans.

Dermacentor similis
A recently described tick previously lumped in with western populations of the American dog tick. CDC lists it alongside D. variabilis, places it west of the Rocky Mountains, and says more research is needed on its role in disease transmission. In Canada it has been confirmed in southern British Columbia by DNA sequencing of ticks taken from companion animals, though drag sampling has not yet demonstrated an established free-living population.
Dermacentor variabilis
The American dog tick, and the "wood tick" of prairie usage. Widely distributed east of the Rocky Mountains, with limited areas to the west. It transmits tularemia and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Adult females are the stage most likely to bite humans, and the highest risk falls in spring and summer.

Haemaphysalis longicornis
The Asian longhorned tick, reported in the United States for the first time in 2017 and found in twenty states as of 12 April 2024. Females can lay eggs and reproduce without mating, and thousands of ticks may be found at a time on vegetation or a single animal. CDC says it appears less attracted to humans than native species and that research into its role in human disease is ongoing.

host seeking
The behaviour of a tick actively waiting on vegetation for an animal to brush past. Surveillance counts host-seeking ticks specifically, because a tick on a leaf tip is a tick available to bite you; drag and flag sampling is designed to collect exactly this population.

Ixodes pacificus
The western blacklegged tick, found along the Pacific coast of the United States and particularly in northern California, extending into southern British Columbia. All life stages bite humans, but nymphs and adult females are more often reported on people.

Ixodes scapularis
The blacklegged or deer tick, widely distributed across the eastern United States and eastern Canada, and the principal vector of Lyme disease in North America. Nymphs and adult females are the stages most likely to bite humans. Adults may search for a host any time winter temperatures rise above freezing.

larva
The six-legged stage that hatches from the egg, before the tick moults into a nymph. Larvae are small enough that surveillance programmes test them in pooled batches rather than individually; in CDC's 2026 North Carolina study, 229 larvae were combined into nine pools of between six and 149 ticks each.

nymph
The eight-legged immature stage between larva and adult. For blacklegged ticks, nymphs are among the stages most likely to bite people, which combined with their small size makes them the stage that drives most Lyme disease risk.

Rhipicephalus sanguineus
The brown dog tick, distributed worldwide. Dogs are its primary host at every life stage, though it may bite humans and other mammals. CDC lists it as transmitting Rocky Mountain spotted fever in the southwestern United States and along the US–Mexico border, and it is the one species in CDC's list that occurs in Hawaii.

Pathogens and diseases
alpha-gal syndrome
A serious, potentially life-threatening allergy to alpha-gal, a molecule present in most mammals but not in people, that can develop after a tick bite. In the United States it is primarily associated with lone star tick bites. Reactions follow eating red meat or exposure to other mammal-derived products, and new tick bites may reactivate them.

Anaplasma phagocytophilum
The bacterium that causes anaplasmosis, transmitted by blacklegged ticks. Surveillance distinguishes a human-active strain from a nonhuman-active strain, also called variant 1, which occurs in Ixodes scapularis but does not cause disease in humans.

Babesia microti
The parasite that causes babesiosis, one of the pathogens CDC lists as transmitted by the blacklegged tick. It is a protozoan rather than a bacterium, which is why it does not respond to the antibiotics used for Lyme disease.

Borrelia burgdorferi
The spirochaete bacterium that causes Lyme disease, transmitted in North America by blacklegged and western blacklegged ticks. Surveillance reports often specify B. burgdorferi sensu stricto to distinguish it from related species in the wider B. burgdorferi complex.

Borrelia miyamotoi
A relapsing fever spirochaete carried by blacklegged ticks, causing hard tick relapsing fever rather than Lyme disease. It is known to infect the eggs of adult female ticks before they are laid, which is why it turns up in larval pools. CDC's 2026 western North Carolina report suggested its detection there might be the farthest south it has been found in blacklegged tick populations.

Bourbon virus
A tick-borne virus transmitted by lone star ticks, first identified in Bourbon County, Kansas. There is no routinely available clinical test for it, so cases are only confirmed when samples reach a specialised laboratory. New York State's first documented human infection was reported in 2026 from a retrospective study of stored blood samples.
Ehrlichia chaffeensis
One of two Ehrlichia species CDC lists as causing human ehrlichiosis after lone star tick bites, the other being E. ewingii. A different species, Ehrlichia muris eauclairensis, is transmitted by the blacklegged tick.

erythema migrans
The expanding rash that can follow a bite from an infected blacklegged tick, often described as a bullseye. CDC's investigators counted documented erythema migrans after a tick exposure as evidence of infection. CDC's public advice is to see a doctor if a rash or fever appears within several days to weeks of removing a tick.
Heartland virus
A tick-borne virus transmitted by lone star ticks, listed by CDC among the pathogens that species carries. Like Bourbon virus it has no routinely available clinical test. Nebraska public health laboratories reported the state's first detections in local lone star ticks in 2026.

Powassan virus
A virus transmitted by Ixodes ticks and the only arbovirus endemic to ticks in Maine. Maine CDC states transmission can occur in as little as 15 minutes after a bite from an infected tick, and that about 1% of deer ticks submitted to the University of Maine tick laboratory test positive. There is no antibiotic treatment; infection can be severe.
Rickettsia rickettsii
The bacterium that causes Rocky Mountain spotted fever, transmitted by Dermacentor ticks and, in the southwestern United States and along the US–Mexico border, by the brown dog tick. A laboratory study showed the invasive Asian longhorned tick can carry and spread it, but CDC notes the bacterium has not yet been found in those ticks in nature.

Prevention and removal
attachment time
How long a tick has been feeding, estimated from how engorged it is or from when the exposure happened. It is one of the criteria in CDC's post-exposure prophylaxis guidance, which sets the threshold at an estimated 36 hours or longer for a blacklegged tick. Attachment time does not transfer between pathogens: Maine CDC notes Powassan virus can be transmitted within minutes.

doxycycline
The antibiotic used both to treat several tick-borne infections and, as a single dose, for Lyme disease post-exposure prophylaxis when all of CDC's criteria are met. North Carolina's public health guidance notes that the short courses used for rickettsial disease do not cause dental staining in children under eight and should be used.
engorgement
The swelling of a tick's body as it fills with blood. Clinically it is the visual proxy for attachment time in CDC's prophylaxis criteria. For identification it is a problem: an engorged tick's colour and proportions change enough that reference photographs stop applying.

eTick
A Canadian public platform where you upload a photograph of a tick and receive an identification. Ontario's own guidance directs residents to it, and its submissions feed provincial surveillance — Public Health Ontario supplements its laboratory data with eTick records.

fine-tipped tweezers
The tool CDC recommends for tick removal. Grasp the tick as close to the skin's surface as possible, which avoids squeezing its body. If fine-tipped tweezers are not available, regular tweezers or fingers can be used to grasp it — the priority is prompt removal.
mouthparts
The anchoring structures a tick inserts into the skin. Twisting or jerking during removal can break them off and leave them behind. CDC's advice if that happens is to remove them with tweezers if it is easy, and otherwise to leave them alone and let the skin push them out as it heals.
permethrin
An insecticide applied to clothing and gear rather than to skin. Permethrin-treated clothing appears in North Carolina's standing advice to clinicians on what to tell patients, alongside repellents, prompt tick removal, showering after coming indoors, and creating tick-safe zones in the yard.
post-exposure prophylaxis
Preventive treatment given after a specific qualifying exposure rather than in advance. For Lyme disease, CDC lists five conditions that must all hold: a high-incidence area or an area where more than 20% of ticks are infected, an identified adult or nymphal blacklegged tick, estimated attachment of 36 hours or more, treatment started within 72 hours of removal, and no contraindication to doxycycline.

repellent
A product applied to skin or clothing to deter ticks. Public health guidance consistently specifies repellents registered with the US Environmental Protection Agency, which means the product's efficacy and safety data have been reviewed rather than merely claimed.

tick check
A deliberate inspection of the whole body after time outdoors, not a glance. It is one of the three core measures CDC's investigators list alongside protective clothing and registered repellents, and it matters most for nymphs, which are small enough to be mistaken for a freckle.

tick-safe zone
Yard management that reduces the habitat ticks and their hosts use — a standing recommendation in North Carolina's clinician guidance on what to advise patients. It complements personal protection rather than replacing it.
steady even pressure
CDC's description of how to pull an attached tick away from the skin: no twisting, no jerking, because either can break the mouthparts off in the skin. The phrase is worth memorising because almost every folk removal method violates it.

In Biltmore Forest, North Carolina, 19 of 48 adult blacklegged ticks carried the Lyme disease bacterium.
That is 39.6%, with a 95% confidence interval of 26.0 to 54.6%. The authors compare it with prevalence in the mid-Atlantic, upper Midwest and Northeast, where Lyme disease is endemic. Read the denominator before the percentage: 48 ticks is a small sample.

The Public Health Agency of Canada recorded 7,105 preliminary Lyme disease cases in 2025.
The highest annual figure since national reporting began in 2009, up from 5,809 in 2024. PHAC notes on the same page that the national case definition was revised in 2016 and again in 2024, which affects how the trend should be read.

Single-dose doxycycline is considered only when every one of the CDC criteria is met.
The criteria are a conjunction, not a menu: high-incidence area or over 20% tick infection, identified adult or nymphal blacklegged tick, 36 hours or more attached, treatment within 72 hours of removal, no contraindication. Miss one and the answer is watchful waiting.

There is no routine clinical test for Heartland or Bourbon virus in the United States.
The 2026 study that documented New York's first human Bourbon virus infection had to send samples to the state health department for neutralisation testing, and closed by calling for expanded surveillance, clinical testing and assay development. Absence of confirmed cases is partly absence of testing.
